Sunday School and Youth Group

2009 Report to Vestry

The Sunday school tries very hard to teach the children of St. John’s about Jesus.

In September the program was redesigned. New teachers were recruited. Thank you to Aaron Purdie, Sarah Booth, Elizabeth Sherlock, Pam Tattersfield, Maegan Bruce and Ariel Van Brummelen for coming forward to help in this important ministry.

After much research a new program was found from the Diocese of Keewaitin with curriculum of free materials available online.

The numbers are small but the children in Sunday school are very bright. Seven children attend, with an average of about three each Sunday, Often the preschoolers in the nursery join in.

In October Sarah Booth and Ariel Van Brummelen attended the Diocesan Sunday School and Youth workers Conference at Christ Church Cathedral.

In December Sarah attended a 3 day Youth Workers of Canada Conference in Vancouver.

The Youth Group shrunk dramatically when the Stuchbery family moved in January. The farewell party was a sad but at the same time a very lively affair.

We also said goodbye to leader, Tessa Dudley, who has moved on to nursing school.

Thank you to Karen Macdonald for helping take Tessa’s place.

In 2009 the youth took a leadership role in organizing a team for the Relay for Life. They hosted a successful Ladies night fundraiser, screening Momma Mia. There are plans for Team Vox Ephebus again in 2010. Another fun night is planned around the movie Grease.

With help from their parents the youth look after the bottle donations that support their foster child, Stacy, in Ecuador.

Eight of the youth attended the spring youth diocesan event “Survivor Artaban”

It was great to find out we are a part of a larger group. They were pleased to meet the diocesan youth co-ordinator Phil Colvin.

Though the youth group is very small and not always able to attend Sunday services regularly, they are very happy to be a part of St. John’s Church family.
